Shout Out DFW

MEET JONATHAN GUTHEINZ | FILMMAKERWe had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Gutheinz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first started Blueroof Productions, the idea behind it was that no one was going to show up and invite me to the table. If I wanted to enter the film world and tell the stories that I had running through my head, I had to go out and tell them, myself. We live in an age where entertainment is becoming more and more democratized. People can go out and find the entertainment they want, we are no longer bound to three channels. The world has changed and all we can do is try and go along for the ride. Put ourselves in a position where we can take advantage of the shifting landscape and come out with a piece of the ever enlarging pie.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art is a reflection of the artist. It’s unique to the person who created it, who poured a little bit of themselves into it. Everything you accomplish should fill you with both pride a just a bit of shame. You look back at the things you’ve created and see all that you accomplished and all that you could have done better. The flaws always scream out at you, but even so, you made something from nothing. It’s never easy, least of all in film when there is so many moving parts. All you can do is set yourself up as best as you can and try to hold on for the ride. Murphy’s Law tends to be in full swing on a film set, but that kind of chaos is always fun. If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that you have to be true to yourself. Everyone has an idea about who you should be, how your art should look. At the end of the day you have to put all of that aside and tell the story that you are trying to tell.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I’m a bit of a homebody. I’d much rather be in the office working. I guess if an old friend was visiting and I wanted to show them around, I’d take them out to the Ivy Tavern for a couple of drinks. Maybe go play some games at Main Event.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a lot of people who have inspired me over the years. Both people that I know personally and people’s who work has touched me. On a personal front, I’d first like to shoutout the people who have helped me the most, Ashley Leal and Elizabeth Khan. As far as teachers go, Larry Stanley has taught me more on set than any classroom ever has.
