Tales of the Slayers: Prologue

So I thought I would start a weekly blog on my favorite show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now I know what you guys are thinking; doesn't he already have a podcast on this topic? You're right I do!

But that isn't as in depth as I would like. Part of it is that Lawrence hasn't seen the show before or the fact that we don't do the podcast as much as I'd like. So I thought lets jump farther and farther into the buffyverse. So the question becomes, where do I start? The Buffy movie? The first episode the TV show? Eh how about the comic books? That sounds about right.

So today, the first issue in the Buffyverse will be the topic of our conversation. So what is it? Well like the title says (Yes I named the blog after the issue, go figure) it's the prologue of Tales of the Slayer.

It's a dark tale about the first slayer. Now over the show we start to learn bits and pieces of her story. After all she lived in a time long since forgotten. The story starts off as she dusts a vampire. Her mind on the task at hand. A young girl from the village brings her food and asks her to leave. She tells her what the shadow men did to her. Who are the Shadow Men? Well they are the men who gave the slayer her powers, they are the people who would go on to form the Watchers Council. Shady, shady people, these Shadow Men.

The first slayer listens to the girl, who tells her she is sorry for asking her to leave, even tells her why the people are afraid of her. That in order to make her the slayer the Shadow Men had to put the essence of a demon inside her. Making her something else, something not human. It is a heartbreaking thing to witness, someone being gifted/cursed to be able to make a difference in the world and for her troubles the rest of the world will turn its back on her.

The first slayer seems to understand that this is her lot in life and the knowledge that there will be other girls, other slayers in the future brought a smile to her face. And why not, she was no longer alone.

It is only fitting that the first story to take place in this universe is written by non other than Joss Whedon himself.
