Buffy is back at the tail end of her summer after spending some father daughter time out in LA. The exciting season 2 starts off in this story written by Joss Whedon himself.
The episode starts off with Willow and Xander throwing movie quotes at each other until they start to get bored. Xander misses the excitement of fighting the undead as well as seeing Buffy who neither one of them have really seen or heard from since she left to LA to stay with her father. Xander starts to flirt with Willow and she is loving it. Setting the first tease of attraction that will ruin them both next season. Their almost kiss is interrupted by a vampire, who in turn has his dinner interrupted by Buffy herself. Seems the slayer has returned to Sunnydale at long last. The trio or Scoobies are glad to be reunited. Seems that LA was good to Buffy. No undead or anything while she was gone. Since Buffy came back he forgot all about Willow. They tell the slayer about where they buried the Master's body. Hank and Joyce talk about Buffy and how she was in LA. It seems she was acting weird over. Distant, almost as if something was on her mind, like the fact that she died maybe? Cordy is back in Sunnydale after a vacation as well and is already holding court with her lackeys. Snyder tells Giles that teenagers are useless, the second a pretty girl walks by they lose the ability to concentrate or even talk. Just then Jenny walks up and Giles proves it isn't just teenage boys but rather adults as well. The Scoobies all meet up in the hallway, Jenny now part of the group, and we learn that just because the hellmouth is closed doesn't mean the energy isn't still calling demons to Sunnydale. Giles starts Buffy's training back up, she isn't right. There is an anger in her that is worrisome to Giles. The Anointed one is still in town. A preacher vampire is now running things in his name. These damn religious vampires and all their vampire bible talk. Willow and Xander go and find Buffy sitting alone, they join her and try to cheer her up when Giles shows up and starts kicking her ass, choking the life out of her while Willow and Xander watch on. She pulls of Giles face and shows him to be the Master. It's all a dream, one that she is glad to wake up from. Sitting in her room is Angel. Seems he has heard that she is back in town. The two of them get into a fight quickly once he starts talking about work and she attacks him. Verbally not with the real fighting but still. He takes off but not before telling her that he missed her. She tries to say it back but he is already gone. Joyce tries to connect with Buffy but she will have none of it. Willow and Xander can't really get through to Buffy either but they don't seem to understand that she is going through a hard time. Cordy is being all nice to them. Seems that fighting the forces of evil has had an effect on her. They make sure that she hasn't been telling people about what happened. She tells them that her secret is safe and Buffy throws out a pretty good insult. It's the first time Willow and Xander see that something is wrong with her. Xander doesn't want to hear it when Willow tries to point out how messed up Buffy is acting. She puts cream on her nose, the same way Xander did when he almost kissed her but this time he doesn't try, he just tells her to clean herself off. Poor Willow. The preacher vampire orders his lackeys to dig up the Master. Meanwhile back at the Bronze Buffy shows up and tells Angel that she has moved on before asking Xander to dance and goes all seductive mode on him. She asks him if she has thanked him for saving her and if he wises she would before taking off. You want to feel bad for Xander because it was brutal but at the same time he was just a jerk to Willow so I guess it's karma right? Cordy catches up with Buffy outside and tries to talk her into stop being such a bitch but Buffy doesn't want to listen. She is could care less what Cordy has to say. Even less so when Cordy starts to speak the truth to her. Buffy storms off just as Cordy is kidnapped by the preacher's vampires. Buffy finds out that the Master's bones were stolen. Willow and Xander think that Buffy is possessed but Giles isn't sure. He starts to tell them what he thinks is wrong with Buffy when she shows up and Xander warns him off. Buffy confronts them about the Master's bones being stolen to bring him back to life. She blames Giles for all of this. She then tells Willow to shut up but Xander jumps to her aid. Only before Buffy could say anything Snyder shows up and sends the trio running off. Snyder says that he just knows Buffy will be expelled before the year is out. And you know what? He is right!!!! The Scoobies gather and Giles tells them that they need the person closes to the Master to bring him back. Buffy thinks that they mean her. The vampires throw in a note that shows them that they have Cordy. Buffy fires the other Scoobies and goes it alone. Telling them that she doesn't need them. Willow is pissed that Buffy is acting like this but there is nothing she can do. Angel follows Buffy and she makes it clear she doesn't want him around either. She even tries to fight him. Buffy, alone, enters the Bronze to look for the vampires who have Cordy and instead finds just one vamp pretending to be Cordy. Angel shows up anyways. He tells Buffy something isn't right, this is the bait but not the hook. Buffy still doesn't get it. Back at the library, Giles figures out that the vampires need the people who were in the room with the Master when he died, that would be Jenny, Willow, Cordy and Giles. Buffy rushes back to the library to find Xander beat up. He tells Buffy that all of this is her fault and if anything happened to Willow he will kill her. She asks why he was left behind when the others weren't. She takes Xander with her back to the Bronze where they torture the vampire pretending to be Cordy till she tells her everything she wants to know. The vampires are getting ready to do the spell when Buffy, Angel and Xander show up. She tells the guys to save their friends while she goes to fight the vampires. The fight starts and Buffy is taking all her problems out on these blood suckers. Angel joins the fight as Xander gets the others down. Giles and Jenny wake up in time to see Buffy going crazy. It comes down to Buffy and the preacher, well the preacher and his hammer. She burns him to death without even trying. It was too easy but his death seemed to snap something in her. She picks up the hammer and smashes up the Master's bones. Angel holds her once she is done. He knows what she is going through and wants to help her. Giles looks up, feeling helpless as any father would when seeing their daughter hurt. Giles tells Buffy that she needs to patch things up with her friends. That they will understand and accept her. She doesn't see how that will happen. She was horrible to them but they prove Giles right. They take her back with open arms. The Scoobies are back!!! The Anointed one survived the attack.
